This Mike Strantz design perfectly captures what made the late architect so special - dramatic elevation changes carved from coastal South Carolina flatlands, strategic bunkering that doubles as sculpture, and greens that demand precise approach shots. Strantz transformed what could have been another forgettable resort track into something memorable, using his trademark massive waste bunkers and undulating fairways to create a course that plays much longer and more challenging than the yardage suggests. The routing takes full advantage of the natural lowcountry landscape, with several holes threading through marshland and others elevated on ridges that Strantz built from scratch. What sets Caledonia apart from other Myrtle Beach area courses is Strantz's refusal to play it safe - you'll find forced carries over wetlands, greens perched on plateaus, and approach shots that demand both distance control and nerves. The conditioning is typically excellent, and while it's pricier than some public options in the area, you're paying for a true architectural experience rather than just another round of golf. If you appreciate bold design and don't mind a course that fights back, this belongs on your Pawleys Island itinerary.
